What You’ll Need:

I’ve found that the best method for rooting most trailing plants is in water, especially with String of Bananas. Rooting hormone is also totally optional, as I’ve noticed the roots grow just as fast without it.

Step 1:

Get your String of Bananas cutting. Make sure the cutting has a node at the bottom, as shown above. This is where the root will come in. If you’d like, you can dip the cuttings in rooting hormone, then tap off the excess.

Step 2:

Now, place your cuttings in water so that the nodes are underwater. Remember to change the water regularly. Clean, fresh water helps prevent your cuttings from rotting. You should notice roots coming in within a week.

Step 3:

Once roots are at least 2-3 inches long, the cutting can be planted. The cuttings in Step 2 have been in water for a few weeks and are ready to be planted. Some plants can be sensitive when transitioning from water to soil, so make sure the soil stays moist until the plant has acclimated to the change. You can use any sort of humidity dome or DIY one with a plastic bag to help keep the soil moist. Once acclimated, these plants like bright light and well-draining soil. Water when the top of the soil feels dry.

Now you’ve grown your own String of Bananas! It’s really so easy, this is one of my favorite plants to propagate.
