For the last four years, I’ve been on a quest to find cleaner fragrances that don’t have the toxic chemicals that most perfumes do. Making this transition hasn’t been easy! With all the research I’ve done, I thought it’d be helpful to put it all together in a blog post to help others find safer fragrances as well.

The selection of clean perfumes is much bigger than it was before, which I’m so grateful for. When I first started looking years ago, it seemed like there weren’t as many options as there is today.

When I was younger, I LOVED designer perfumes. My parents were very big on their fragrances, and I loved trying out my mom’s perfumes when I was little. As I got older, I loved growing my collection and finding my new favorite perfumes. I had no idea that perfumes could have harmful ingredients back then. This all changed when I got pregnant with my daughter and began researching how I could reduce toxic ingredients in my lifestyle. The first thing that came up in my research was the harm of fragrances, especially around babies. Now, I try to use cleaner products that are safer to use around my daughter.

I hope this list is helpful for you if you’re on the search for safer, low-tox fragrances. If you have any you’d like to add to this list, please comment them below! The EWG app can be helpful when looking at new products and their ingredients. I will also note that I’m far from an expert on fragrances, and I still don’t know much about the different notes. My personal preferences are on the warmer, sweeter side, but I like a variety of scents!

The 7 Virtues

The 7 Virtues is the first clean perfume I purchased when I was pregnant, and it’s still my favorite to this day. I use Vanilla Woods (pear, rose, vanilla) almost everyday, and also have Santal Vanille (myrrh, vanilla, sandalwood). Their perfumes are hypoallergenic, phthalate free, paraben free, sulphate free, and formaldehyde free. They also have various sampler sets so you can try their different fragrances. All of their perfumes also have great EWG reviews, which is so good to see.

Skylar

Another one of my favorites is Skylar. I have Salt Air (driftwood, sea salt, seaweed). It’s my favorite scent for the summer, and I’ve gotten a lot of compliments wearing it. I’ve also been wanting to try Boardwalk Delight (pure vanilla, cotton candy, coconut milk), which is one of their newer scents. Skylar perfumes are hypoallergenic, phthalate free, paraben free, sulphate free, and more.

Phlur

I still have yet to find my favorite scent from Phlur, but it is a really popular line of fragrances. Golden Rule (mandarin splash, jasmine blossom, coconut milk) is their most recent scent, and I’m kind of regretting not purchasing it after testing it in Sephora. Phlur focuses largely on sustainable practices in creating their fragrances, and does not use synthetic dyes, parabens, sulfates, phthalates, or BHT.

By Rosie Jane

By Rosie Jane is another popular clean fragrance brand that has been around for awhile now. I have Madie (jasmine, sea spray, vanilla) and it’s another good summer perfume. I really want to try their sampler set too. They’re also big on sustainability with all products free of: parabens, sulfates, phthalates, silicones, formaldehydes or formaldehyde-releasers, oxybenzone and octinoxate, hydroquinone, triclosan, coal tar, methylisothiazolinone and more.

Clean Reserve

Clean Reserve is another popular clean fragrance brand that has been around for awhile now. My favorite is Rain (bergamot, white flower, vetiver), but I have yet to smell all of their scents. Their fragrances are free of BHA, silicones, parabens, phthalates, synthetic colors, and more.

Commodity

Commodity is a line that I’ve just discovered and am really wanting to try. Their fragrances are interesting in that they come in different strengths or “spaces”. This sample set includes their fragrances in all the different spaces. Their spaces are described as: Personal: a soft, intimate projection, Expressive: a balanced, noticeable projection, Bold: a powerful, room-filling projection. Their fragrances are made without any known toxins, carcinogens, parabens, phthalates, and sulfates.

Henry Rose

I have yet to try any of the scents from Henry Rose, but they always come up when looking for clean perfumes. Their full size bottles are also very pretty. Their fragrances have no parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde, known carcinogens, known endocrine disruptors, and are also all hypoallergenic. They also have a very wide variety of scents to choose from.

Dedcool

Dedcool is another line that I’ve just recently discovered. It seems to be a newer brand that has become pretty popular. They’re described as lighter than most perfumes, which is good for those who don’t like fragrances that are too strong. The brand also markets many of their scents as good for layering. Their fragrances are free of parabens, phthalates, carcinogens, EDTA, fillers, and animal byproducts.

Maison Louis Marie

Maison Louis Marie is another well-known, clean line of fragrances. For some reason, I’ve never given them a try when I see them in stores. After reading reviews, I’ll be sure to give them a try next time I get a chance. Their fragrances are free of: Parabens, Phthalates, Sulfates, Formaldehyde, Butylated compounds, Talc, Coal Tar, Mineral Oil, Oxybenzone, Coal Tar, Acetone, Benzaldehyde, Benzyl Acetate, and many more.

Sephora Clean Discovery Set

My next perfume purchase will have to be this discovery set from Sephora. It has almost all of the scents that I’ve been dying to try, and it will save me a lot of time from smelling perfumes in Sephora. So far, this is the only clean sample set I’ve seen, and it’s always sold out in stores. If you know of any other reputable places to get perfume samples, please let me know!

I hope this post has been helpful if you’re looking for a new line of clean perfumes! While it’s hard to say if any perfume is truly clean, it’s nice to find brands that are at least making an effort creating perfumes with safer ingredients. Feel free to comment below if you have a particular favorite you think I should try next.
