Growing plants can be tough if you don’t get a lot of light in your home. While all plants need at least some light, there are a lot of plants that can survive in low to medium light.
Some plants may get leggy or lose leaves, which means they will do best in bright, indirect light. Still, the plants in this post can tolerate lower light conditions. It’s important to remember that variegated types of plants will typically require more light. Also, less light usually means plants will require less water to live.

Dracaena:
Most Dracaena are good for low to medium light conditions. I have a Dracaena Marginata in my dim bedroom that has been doing well for years! These plants are fairly drought-tolerant and can go for awhile without water. Allow the soil to dry between waterings, and be careful to avoid overwatering.
Peace Lily:
Peace Lilies are probably one of my favorite low light plants. They’re so easy to care for, and will droop when they need watering. Let Peace Lily’s soil dry between waterings. They will droop to let you know when they need water.
Spider Plant:
Spider Plants are a really fun low light plant. They’re another really easy plant because they grow so fast. When mature, they also produce little babies that can be propagated. Spider Plants should have their soil dry between waterings.
Pothos:
Pothos are another one of my low light favorites. They’re the best beginner plant, and there’s a few varieties. Because they’re a climbing plant, their vines can grow long pretty fast. Allow the top half of the soil to dry before watering. Pothos will droop letting you know when they need watering.
Heart-leaf Philodendron:
These Philodendron are really similar to Pothos and are another great beginner plant. The variegated types will do better with more light, but the Cordatum and Micans can do well in lower light. Allow the top half of soil to dry before watering. Like Pothos, these plants will also droop when water is needed.
Chinese Evergreen:
Another easy plant, the Chinese Evergreen has several different varieties. They can grow fairly big, and like moist conditions. Allow the top few inches of soil to dry before watering, but do not let them dry out completely.
Dwarf Umbrella Tree:
Dwarf Umbrella Trees are amazing plants and can grow quite large with low light conditions. There is also a variegated variety that may do better with more light. These plants are sensitive to overwatering and should be allowed to dry out between waterings.
Dieffenbachia:
Another easy beginner plant, the Dieffenbachia can do well in low to medium light. There’s also a lot of varieties of Dieffenbachia out there. Allow the soil to dry before watering, as these plants are sensitive to overwatering.
Nerve Plant:
Nerve plants are such interesting looking plants, and are also really easy because they droop when water is needed. They will do well in low to medium light. There’s a few varieties of Nerve Plants, including a pink one! Water them thoroughly when soil has dried out.
Cast Iron Plant:
The Cast Iron Plant is another plant that is pretty hardy, making it a good beginner plant. They can survive in low to medium light. Water throughly when the soil has dried, but be careful not to overwater.
ZZ Plant:
Another super easy plant, the ZZ Plant is pretty interesting and unique-looking as well. It can handle just about any light condition. They are also pretty drought-tolerant and can dry completely before watering.
Lucky Bamboo:
Probably one of the better-known low light plants, Lucky Bamboo is another super easy plant. They can grow really fast, and will do well with any light conditions. It’s common for Bamboo to be grown in water, but be sure to use filtered water. If grown in soil, allow it to stay moist but not soggy.
Maidenhair Fern:
A lot of germs can do well in lower light, but especially the Maidenhair Fern. There are a lot of different varieties of Maidenhairs, and they can be somewhat difficult because they love humidity. Because they love moist conditions, they should be watered as soon as the soil begins to dry out.
Parlor Palm:
The Parlor Palm is a plant that can live in a variety of light conditions. These tropical plants can actually grow quite tall. Do not allow the soil to dry out completely. Parlor Palms like moist, but not soggy conditions and should be watered as soon as the soil begins to dry out.
