Nowadays, there are so many amazing options for velcro and zipper swaddles that are much easier to use than traditional swaddles. Yet, it’s a given that most moms get lots of swaddle blankets as gifts. With all of these swaddle blankets, it can be hard to know what to use them for.

In this post, I’m going to go over all the ways I use swaddle blankets aside from actual swaddling. These blankets are actually so handy, and I’m really happy to have them. I always make sure to have one with me in my diaper bag. There’s so much you can do with them! Babies can only be swaddled for so long before they start rolling over, so finding other uses for the blankets helps ensure that you can continue using them.

#1: Breastfeeding Cover

The number one thing I use these blankets for is to cover myself when breastfeeding. I know covering up is totally personal preference, and it’s just what makes me feel more comfortable, especially while I’m still getting the hang of things. Because these blankets are so light and breathable, they make great covers for breastfeeding.

#2: Changing Cover

Another use for these blankets is to cover surfaces to change baby on. Especially if you’re changing outside of the house. I do have a changing pad, but it’s nice to have an extra layer of protection in case of accidents. Since the changing pad is so narrow, I also like the blanket to keep her from touching the changing station in portable restrooms. Lastly, these blankets come in handy in case I forget a changing pad, which happens all the time!

#3: Burp Cloth

If you’re a parent, then you know pretty much anything can be used as a burp cloth if you’re in a pinch. Spit up and drool is always unexpected! Swaddle blankets make for perfect burp cloths, especially if you’re already using them as a breastfeeding cover as listed above.

#4: Carrier Cover

Since our car has tinted windows, I thought we wouldn’t need any window shades. Well I was wrong! Swaddle blankets are perfect for protecting your baby from the sun. They’re also perfect to cover your baby for some privacy while napping in their carrier or out in public. Since they’re so breathable, they make for good covers in general.

#5: Regular Blanket

This last one is probably the most obvious use of swaddle blankets on this list. If you don’t use them for swaddling, they can always be used as a regular blanket to keep your baby warm and cozy. This is especially true during the winter or if you forget an actual blanket.

Swaddles really are so versatile and can be used for so much more than just swaddling. If you have them laying around, don’t put them off just because you don’t swaddle your baby with them! They’re especially handy to have in your diaper bag if you find yourself in a pinch outside of the house. I hope this list has given you some good ideas for these blankets!
